Week 3 Vocabulary




Virulent: extremely poisonous; malignant; full of hate

The virulent bite of the copperhead snake is deadly.




Antonyms: benevolent, loving
The loving puppy comforted the tiny kitten.




Scrutinize: to examine closely

The man will scrutinize the document to be sure there are no errors.



Antonyms: casually scan or skim; browse
The Queen took a glance at her book with her son.

 
Discord: disagreement
The couple’s discord caused unhappiness in the family.


Antonyms: agreement; concord

The handshake means the two men came to an agreement on the situation.




Repudiate: to reject; to deny

The young man decided to repudiate the woman’s affections.




Antonyms: to acknowledge; to confirm

The woman accepted the marriage proposal to confirm her love for her fiancé.




Diligent: hardworking
The diligent student did very well in school.

Antonyms: lazy, idle, inactive
The lazy young man received a failing grade for his performance.



Superficial: on the surface only; shallow; not thorough
The superficial celebrity cared only about satisfying her own needs. 


Antonyms: deep, profound

Oprah’s profound belief in education inspired her to build a girls’ school in Africa.



Contempt: reproachful disdain

The singer’s poor performance earned contempt from the judge.


Antonyms: admiration, esteem, respect

The fans applauded to show their admiration for the performers.


Lucid: clear; easy to understand

The crescent moon was visible in the lucid blue sky.


Antonyms: clouded, dim, dull, lackluster
Downtown Cincinnati was clouded by the heavy fog.



Aesthetic: having to do with artistic beauty; artistic

The aesthetic appeal of “The Nutcracker” ballet can be seen in the costumes and the dances.


Antonyms: grotesque, hideous, homely
The three-headed dog was frightening and grotesque.



Prodigal: extravagant; wasteful
The prodigal mansion contained a tennis court, swimming pool, and helicopter landing pad.


Antonyms: conserving, economical, frugal
Solar panels on a house make heating bills more economical.
