Depravity: moral corruption
The slippery slope of depravity is brought on by lying and cheating.

Antonyms: moraltiy, virtue


Mary, the Virgin Mother, is a symbol of morality and virtue.



Gravity: seriousness
The gravity of the situation in the war-torn nation was seen in the child carrying a shotgun.

Antonyms: unseriousness, lightness, frivolity


The lightness of the gathering can be seen in the smiles on the ladies’ faces.

 
Banal: unoriginal, ordinary




There is nothing as banal as a plain, white wall with a plain, white picture.


 
Antonyms: fresh, new, original




The newborn baby’s hand is God’s original work of art.

 
Extol: to praise


The man raised his hands to heaven to extol his God.


Antonyms: blame, critized


The boss criticized his employee for his poor work ethic.

 
Euphony: pleasant sound
The euphony of the wind chime was soothing to the older woman.

 
Antonyms: loud, unpleasant noise
The unpleasant noise from the screeching cat made the man plug his ears.

 
Deride: to ridicule; to laugh at contemptuously
A group of students decided to deride the girl for having a pimple on her face.
Antonyms: applaud, approve
The crowd applauded the young man’s accomplishments.


 
Insipid: dull, banal
White rice is an insipid part of the meal.

 
Antonyms: savory, flavorful, tasty


A Chinese meal with fried rice and spicy chicken is a flavorful dinner.

 
Austere: unadorned; stern; forbidding; without much money
An austere teacher can help a student regain focus in a class.

Antonyms: gentle, tolerant, indulgent
Jesus is often pictured as a gentle teacher.

Expedite: to make faster or easier
FedEx helps to expedite the delivery of packages.

 
Antonyms: slow down, restrict, delay


The traffic jam will delay workers on the morning commute.

 
Heresy: an opinion violently opposed to established beliefs


The man’s radical opinions were considered heresy and he was asked to leave the group.

 
Antonyms: conformity, orthodoxy


Uniformed officers marching together are a great example of conformity.
